Deionized water is water with all its ions removed and is without any charge. It’s created exposing normal water to electrically charged resins that will bind and attract to salts and remove them from the water. Deionized water has applications in various industries including medicine, pharmaceuticals, biotech etc. It is a purer than distilled water and can be used for human consumption.
To deionize water, two resins i.e. for ion exchange are used for passing through the Water at least once. The Hydrogen (H+) Ion and Hydroxyl (OH-) Ion are respectively exchanged for Cation (Positively charged Ion) and Anion (Negatively charged Ion). When the resin is run down of its exchange capacity, it is regenerated with caustic and concentrated acid which in turn leave hydrogen and hydroxyl ions and displace accumulated ions.
There are different types of deionizers. The four types of deionizers which are most prevalent used for industrial purposes are discussed here under:
Portable exchange tanks
Apart from the above, a two-bed system uses separate cation and anion resin beds. Mixed-bed deionizers utilize both resins in the same vessel. The highest quality water is produced by mixed-bed deionizers, but two-bed deionizers have a larger capacity. Both cartridge and portable exchange tank units can be used until the resin is drained, after which it is replaced. Automatic units are permanent fixtures, and the resin is reoriginated on site. Continuous deionizers, mainly used in labs for embellishing, do not require regeneration.
There are three types of deionisation: counter-current, co-current and mixed bed deionisation.
Counter-current deionisation happens in two ways either water enter from the bottom of cation or anion ion exchange column and regeneration chemicals from the top, or vice-versa. This is quick, cost-effective and high-quality method of deionisation.
Co-current deionisation was water and regeneration chemicals ended the top of the cation or anion calling and exit at the bottom. This method is expensive and even the result generated is not very pure.
Mixed bed deionisation is deionised water obtained from column of combination of cation and anion resin. It is used only for obtaining high purity water as the same is a very expensive process.
Uses of Deionized Water:
Deionized Water is a good cooling agent and thus, is used from stopping the medical devices to get overheated. This property of deionized water makes it fit for maintaining temperature level.
Being utterly pure Deionized Water is most fit to be used in lab tests for the reason of getting accurate lab test results. Ordinary water has variable temperature owing to contamination and thus, will result in the test being skewed. Thus, deionised water is a preferable option. It is used for even experiments.
Ordinary water can lead to corrosion when industrial machinery is cleaned with it. Thus, deionized water must be used to clean the industrial machinery which is subjected to heavy use. The deionized water can also be used to lubricate and manufacture certain products.
It is said that life span of lead-acid car batteries increases by usage of deionized water and it is best for being used in the car’s coolant system thus, deionised water is used as the alternative water. Contrary to contamination properties in ordinary water which may lead engine to rust, hence, shortening its lifespan; deionized water is used for also, diluting concentrated anti-freeze.
Deionized water has very low conductivity thus, making it apt for being used for purring end to fire erupting around electrical equipments. Normal water on the contrary has a high conductivity.
Aquariums:To discard algae formation regular water is avoided in fish aquariums. Instead, deionized water is used as it contains least impurity and is beneficial for overall marine life health.
The Deionized water can be used for microelectronics as well as for medicinal use being a very good solvent. Deionized water generally takes the characteristics of whatever is added to it.
